what is school for?

It is the topic of Seth Godin’s TEDx Youth talk back in 2012. And it’s also the title of my upcoming book, What is school for? A manifesto for parents, scheduled to launch in June 2024.

As a Mom of two children in the public schools and brand strategist, I have been exploring our public school system for 8 years now with both our neighborhood school and charter public schools and interviewed parents across the country with my podcast, Duct Tape Rocket Ship.

From 2020 to 2022, I worked as the parent representative in the Building Leadership Team (the BLT) at our neighborhood school and had a chance to understand the parent’s role in the current school system, the way the system operates, and its impact on students, parents, teachers, staff members, and the principal.

Amid challenges and conflicts in the system, it’s easy to focus on what’s in front of us instead of taking a step back and asking this question:

What is school for?

Until we agree, it’s challenging to know what to do next. My book provides readers with an insider's perspective to help them see beyond the obvious and draw their own conclusions.
