When the world is filled with depressing news, violence, uncertainty, broken hearts, and polarized opinions that lead to division, changes, and desires for changes, it’s challenging to believe that we, as an individual, have the strength, energy, and power to do anything matters.
Many of us find meaning in life by pushing systems to change and tackling areas such as climate, education, health care, technology, etc. But tackling these massive issues can be overwhelming, depressing, and frustrating. It’s not unusual for people to feel hopeless in the process and eventually give up. We get burned out, but often it's not because we choose the wrong work or approach, but because we haven’t learned enough about ourselves to truly understand what we need to not just survive but thrive.
We know the science behind depression, anxiety, and stress, but few people talk about joy, let alone understand joy.
TanmeetSethi, MD, talks about the science of joy in her book, Joyis My Justice. Her teaching has changed my life. I hope it helps yours too.
