the pottery pace

It's the pace that's worthy exploring.

Thinking a thousand miles per second in a fast-paced life is considered natural. We must vet out distractions and move fast to make decisions to help the businesses. We need to look through our inboxes from multiple email addresses to ensure that we stay on top of things because we need to cover the blind spots and catch mistakes before it's too late. We must always create something new because once existence gets old or does not work, nobody cares to pay attention to it anymore.

But when practicing pottery, everything goes almost in the opposite direction. Instead of moving fast, we move slowly. Moving slowly lets us settle in the space where we notice our physical state of being: the level of our tiredness in our arms and hands, the patience we need to practice, and the amount of time we have on the wheel and play with clay.

Instead of moving fast, we savor our time for being slow, preparing the clay, getting all the necessary tools, and setting the wheel up.

Setting things up properly predicts the outcome of the practice. Slowing down is meaningless when the wheel spins, but it starts with our anticipation of spending quality time in the making.

When we know what we seek, we are more likely to find it.
