the concept of shipping

In the creative communities where I belong, we talk about shipping. It simply means sharing our work with someone else.

This definition has changed how we distinguish shipping from doing the work. For example, there are at least two kinds of writing that many of us do every day: one that's meant for ourselves ALONE, such as the morning pages for reflections and self-connection, and the other that's meant to be SHARED, such as blogs, proposals, copies for websites, stories for books and movies, etc.

Sharing can be uncomfortable for many of us. That's why we need a community to practice and improve before we are ready for the greater public. Learning about ourselves and the people we seek to serve along the way helps us ship better at all levels.
