It's easier to notice status and affiliation when we have people to look up to, admire, and want to associate with.
We remark because we want to become the kind of person they are, with the skills they have, the type of work they have accomplished, and, most importantly, the confidence they carry wherever they go.
When people look for a product or service, we often think they are looking for the utility side of their needs, even though that's true. The difference between choosing this product or service over that one might be that it's more likely to help them become the kind of person they aspire to be.
When we choose to see people through this lens, we are closer to truly understanding whom we seek to serve.
