The common confusion between the two lies in differentiating motivation from results. A helpful question to ask ourselves is: What drives me to do this?
Is it so that I can be perceived as smart, famous, and powerful? Or is it to be helpful by serving others?
Because if the motivation is focusing on what I get, I am self-serving. This focus has little to do with the project or business, let alone the people I seek to serve.
But if the motivation is about creating a change that’s so valuable for others, that’s the work worth doing.
Impact doesn’t describe the motivation, but the outcome that our projects and work produce. It didn’t come from serving ourselves, but from the right motivation that leads to the right decisions.
