Putting the two side by side helps us understand these words beyond their surface definitions. The subtle but drastic differences not only reflect differences in values and beliefs but also manifest in drastic outcomes through our attitudes, decisions, and actions.
Using reciprocity versus generosity as examples, one is about exchange, while the other is about contribution (no strings attached).
When we pay close attention, we also see the differences in motivation. One is a strategic move, while the other is driven by empathy and care (who we truly are).
And the list goes on.
One focuses on the exchange (I do this and you give me that), while the other is about the people we seek to serve.
One emphasizes receiving as a reward, while the other focuses on the joy of helping and giving.
If transaction is your thing, reciprocity helps. But if you seek to be remarkable, reciprocity just doesn’t cut it.
Not everyone chooses to be generous. And because of it, that's the kind of scarcity worth talking about.
