When I was in the Nonviolent Communication Learning Program, I journaled every day. It’s not because it was required, but an action I can take to connect with my feelings and needs. At first, it was a practice to be aware of my emotions and longings, but over time, I have learned something remarkable about it.
Journaling is a practice that allows me to see my whole, honest self, but more importantly, see others around me through a different lens. I practiced empathy towards the people and things that upset me; processed the deepest longing inside me, and sat there long enough to eventually let go of things and people.
When I stopped journaling, processing emotions, and forgiving, disconnections became a loop in my mind and never progressed into anything else helpful.
Back to journaling! Many thanks to the conversation between Seth Godin and Shaka Senghor today.
