how we communicate

A fast lane on the highway had cars lined up for miles. It’s not normal even for the morning commute. The message board said “right lane closed”. And it turned out the right land didn’t close, but moved simply slower than usual. If it says “right lane slow” or “expect delay” instead, it would help cars move through both lanes. The word “closed” means “do not enter” to many people and caused the traffic with one lane overcrowded and the other nearly empty.

It's not easy to teach kids breakdancing. Turtle freeze is a skill that a dancer uses one hand and forearm to support the entire body weight. The elbow and upper arm are tucked under the same side of the body to reinforce the support. Demonstration isn’t enough for children to grasp the concept. Explanation would be helpful. When the teacher struggles with words and self-expression, kids are all over the place.

Getting better with the public and interpersonal communications matters. It impacts our lives, makes or breaks our connections with each other. Little by little. Over time.
