Very few people are willing to lean in and listen to criticism and blame.
When we conflate emotions with feedback and requests, we are way less effective in holding people accountable.
An effective way to do this is to break it down into 2 separate steps:
First, take care of the triggered emotions. One way to do that is through connecting with our feelings and needs.
Second, articulate the issues and why they are problems that need answers and resolutions.
Until we center our emotions to focus on the actual issues, it can be challenging to get people’s attention to listen and change.
