I don’t know if you have noticed that it’s harder and harder to get helpful feedback even in an environment where we expect them.
Helpful feedback is empathic: I am willing to imagine your situation. It’s about seeing: I see where you came from, where you are now and where you plan to go. And it’s about honesty: with all the things that I can see, here is what I think the issues are and why I think so.
Helpful feedback is a generous gift because it’s the result of empathy and connection.
When a person shows up that’s big on giving comments and advices but has no interest in real connection and understanding, what we hear are opinions.
Helpful feedback serves and leads people. Opinions don't.
Knowing the difference helps us see the leadership and connection.
