In the nonviolent communication (NVC) world, our empathy buddy is an important part of the practice.
The goal to find an empathy buddy is to receive support from a trusted person when we have a need to connect with self.
Yes, empathy buddy is here to help our self-connection.
The format is rather simple. Between the 2 people, one shares the triggering events that create self-disconnected emotions such as anger, pain, sadness, etc. The other person listens and interacts with guessing the sharer’s feelings and needs. Then switch till the both sides are supported.
Simple format doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy to do. The process requires the listener empty themselves by putting their own feelings and judgements aside in order to be with the sharer, and focus on guessing the sharer’s feelings and needs.
When it’s done beautifully, the sharer usually feels much lighter, calmer (because of the higher inner safety level), and fuller insider out, the feelings of true self-connection.
Everyone has a need for empathy.
Connecting with self is how we meet the need.
