empathy as a guess

Yes, that’s right. Guessing is how we practice empathy.

When it’s hard to know the impact of our work, while we create it, we stand on the opposite side, imagining and guessing others’ reactions.

Because people might react this way or that, I have taken it into consideration. This understanding doesn’t always lead to change or to tweaks in our work, but at least we have a sense of how it might land with people. Over time, we get better at guessing.

When we insist, despite our empathy for our audiences, we know we do so with intention.

Skipping the guess helps nobody and is the least helpful for us, especially when there are plenty of choices out there. People always find what they want.

But the question is: what do you want?
