They go hand in hand.
Discerning problems or opinions to see the truth requires us to go beyond being personal.
Processing our own feelings and needs is personal. Resolving family issues could be personal. Just like there is a line between internal and external, there is a line between when being personal helps and when it doesn't.
Discernment is the capacity to see people and things impersonal. It happens when we don't hold the private agenda (personal gains and losses) as a priority, and is most helpful when people get together to do projects, contribute to each other, and move the needle.
There is a space to be personal. And there is a space to be discerning and impersonal. Choosing it with clarity helps us all.
