communicating strategy vs. need

Beating the bushes is a strategy. But it doesn’t help when we need to get to the point. Getting to the point helps, but it doesn’t always solve problems.

As human beings, we excel at creating strategies. Some of our needs are straightforward to meet. For example, when we are hungry, food sustains us, and when we are tired, resting helps us recharge. However, other needs may require more effort to gain clarity.

It’s essential to engage your business partner and align with them on critical aspects of the business. The goal is not to change their minds, but it is to foster mutual understanding and trust. By demonstrating your understanding of the situation, showing empathy for your partner’s concerns (not just what they care about, but also why they care), and being resourceful in the face of rejections, you can effectively connect with the people you work with.

In communications, understanding the differences between strategy versus needs helps us communicate effectively.

Too often, we let what’s obvious ruin what’s intended from us.
