It’s unlikely to feel that we have choices if we are highly triggered.

One way to bring ourselves down from reaction to feeling that we have a choice is through self-empathy. Having a pause or making a shift by stepping away is to calm down and accept.

Until we can fully accept our triggered self and the situation, choices to respond are out of the question.
