It's common when we are going through a process to figure out who we are, what we are about, and where we want to go compared to others. We want to claim what we stand for by saying we disagree with the status quo and business as usual. With strong emotions.
Of course, we want to improve things we have seen, experienced and disagreed with. That's why we set out to make a change in the first place.
Saying who we are not and what we are not about is an effective way to help us surface our beliefs and values.
Once we figure out our identity and the promise, comparing others doesn't help us anymore. Instead, it's time to focus on how to fulfill our promise through everything we communicate and set out to do.
When we can't stop comparing ourselves, believing it's all about us, we are leaning into contempt and miss the point. Contempt is a dangerous place to be because when we dismiss everything, we dismiss what had worked before.
Making a change starts with recognition, even if that means we are angry about it. Not dismissal.
