There is a difference between sitting next to someone in the same classroom versus believing someone will act in our best interest.
Affiliation offers an opportunity to connect and develop trust, and trust strengthens our sense of affiliation in the same group or system.
In developing personal identity in the group setting, sitting next to someone might help raise our status, but once trust is broken, affiliation weakens.
